The Luhansk State Medical University was founded in 1956. There are 26 departments and 3 faculties within the University: Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine, and Postgraduate Education Faculty with a total of 171 researchers among the teaching staff.

There are 36 postgraduate students in the institution, whose training is carried out in such areas as medicine, pharmacy, and industrial pharmacy.

During 2016–2018, 12 PhD theses and 1 DSc thesis were defended. Within the same period, 4 research works and several scientific and technical projects were completed. The University has 79 patents (20, 48, and 11 obtained in 2016, 2017, and 2018, respectively).

Studying the central and peripheral mechanisms of pain syndromes and the ways for optimizing treatment strategies

Prognostic algorithm for the prevention of complicated acute ulcers of the digestive tract in patients with surgical pathologies

Clinical and pathogenic peculiarities of the course and treatment of somatic and endocrine pathologies in drug addicted patients

Organizational, economic, and marketing research of pharmaceutical activities

Development of formulas and technologies for naturally occurring medicines
