NATO Delegation to Ukraine

On 11 March 2016, the Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on the Status of the NATO Delegation to Ukraine entered into force.

The NATO Representation in Ukraine consists of the NATO Liaison Office and the NATO Information and Documentation Center.

The NATO Liaison Office in Ukraine was opened in April 1999. Its opening confirmed the high level of relations between Ukraine and NATO. The aim of its activities is to promote Ukraine's participation in the Partnership for Peace (PfP) program to make the most of the opportunities provided by this mechanism, as well as to deepen cooperation between NATO and Ukrainian government agencies in the framework of the Annual National Programs. As of September 1, 2015, the NATO Liaison Office in Ukraine is headed by Mr. Alexander Vinnikov.

The liaison office has three main tasks:

  • maintaining contacts with various Ukrainian institutions and relevant NATO structures responsible for the development and implementation of measures in the field of relations between Ukraine and NATO in the framework of the ANP, PfP and in accordance with the NATO-Ukraine Charter, maintaining constant contacts with embassies multilateral cooperation,
  • advising the relevant bodies of Ukraine and NATO on measures and areas for possible deepening of cooperation,
  • participation in the preparation and implementation of some practical activities, such as military exercises or NATO courses at the Ivan Chernyakhovsky National Defense University of Ukraine, facilitates the establishment of official contacts between Ukraine and NATO at all levels.

The NATO Information and Documentation Center in Ukraine was established in Kyiv in 1997 to inform the Ukrainian public about NATO and the benefits of the NATO-Ukraine partnership.

The NATO Mission in Ukraine maintains an active working relationship with the Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Embassy of Canada in Ukraine, which currently serve as the NATO Liaison Embassy (in each Partner country on the principle of rotation).
