Krasnoslobodtsev Ihor Serhiiovych

Mountain climber, researcher

Born on November 1, 1947 in the city of Svatove, into a family of railroad workers. He studied at Svatove Secondary School No. 8, took part in competitions, was fond of music and sports.

He graduated from school with a silver medal. In 1966, he entered the Faculty of Geography of the Lomonosov Moscow State University. He proved to be smart and active, was elected a head of the student group. He spoke several languages, was engaged in sports, paying particular attention to weightlifting. He combined training with work. During his internships, he visited the glaciers of the Polar Urals and the Caucasus. He chose complex and little studied areas of cryolithology and glaciology as the subject of his research.

At the age of 22, he wrote scientific papers on the stone glaciers of the Caucasus, which were successfully published. Krasnoslobodtsev made photos of landscapes from a helicopter and compared the glaciers of the Caucasus and the Alps, and determined their trilogy. In his works, Ihor described and classified the stone glaciers (caves) of the Central and Western Caucasus, and figured out their types and patterns.

On August 22, 1970, during his undergraduate training, Ihor Krasnoslobodtsev visited with students the glaciers of the Eastern Pamirs in the valley of the Markans River, part of the Tajik-Pamir Alpine Glaciological Expedition of the Institute of Geography of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The works were conducted at altitudes of over 5 thousand meters. Ihor Krasnoslobodtsev fell into a crack of the glacier and tragically died. At the foot of the glacier, an obelisk was built in memory of Ihor Krasnoslobodtsev. The glacier No. 69 in the Eastern Pamirs was given his name. He was buried in the Forest Cemetery in Kyiv.

The glacier No. 69 in the Pamir Mountains is given his name.
