General information about NATO

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, also known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), is an international intergovernmental organization, a military-political alliance of 29 North American and European nations seeking to achieve the goal of the North Atlantic Treaty signed in Washington on April 4, 1949.

The (NATO) flag consists of a blue rectangular banner with a white wind rose with white lines on four sides of the world. The colors of the flag have cultural, political, and regional significance. The blue canvas symbolizes the Atlantic Ocean, and the circle symbolizes unity among NATO member states. Adopted October 14, 1953, three and a half years after the organization was established.

Under the Washington Treaty, each member state of the Alliance has additional responsibilities and benefits from participation in the collective security system. Article 5 states that an armed attack on one or more NATO members will be considered an attack on all members and that “they agree that in the event of such an attack, each of them сть will provide assistance to the Party or Parties affected attack, and shall immediately, individually or jointly with other Parties, take such action as may be deemed necessary, including the use of force, to restore and maintain security in the North Atlantic region. " Such unprecedented guarantees of security, territorial integrity, inviolability of borders and state sovereignty are not provided by any of the collective security systems available today.

During the Cold War, the Alliance never used military force against third countries or to influence its member states. At the same time, the USSR, at the head of the Warsaw Pact, which applied for NATO membership in 1954 but was refused, did not hesitate to use military intervention in the internal affairs of the Allies in the socialist camp in Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968).

All decisions in the Alliance are based on consensus. Every NATO member has a veto.

NATO does not have its own armed forces, the Alliance has member states at its disposal. (Some NATO member states do not have their own armies at all, including Luxembourg and Iceland).

Any member state has the right to withdraw from the Alliance. For the history of the organization, this right was used by France and Greece, which, respectively, in 1966. and in 1974. left NATO's military structure, but remained within its political structure. In 1980, Greece's full participation in NATO's military structure was restored. France has also resumed its participation in NATO's military structure, as announced at the Jubilee NATO Summit in Strasbourg in 2009, when the Organization celebrated its 60th anniversary.

In 2014, the Alliance suspended practical cooperation with the Russian Federation after its aggression against Ukraine, but left the channel of communication - the NATO-Russia Council and began to pursue a policy of containment of Russia.

For international investors, NATO is a clear sign of stability and therefore greater investment attractiveness.

NATO membership is open to & quot; any other European country capable of deepening the principles of this Treaty and contributing to the security of the North Atlantic area & quot ;.

NATO Goals

Today, in the 21st century, the Alliance faces a set of strategic goals and objectives that are fundamentally different from those of the past, including overcoming the effects of the division of Europe during the Cold War, strengthening democracy in Central and Eastern Europe.

We are talking about the fight against weapons of mass destruction, terrorism and countries with illegitimate regimes, which may be tempted to use such weapons or hand them over to terrorists.

To maintain its credibility and public confidence around the world, not just in the West, the Alliance must meet these threats and meet new challenges.
