Recognition of Ukraine: December 22, 1998.

There are no high-level bilateral bodies.
Ukrainian-Malawian relations are characterized by interaction within the framework of international organizations through mutual support for appointment to the UN bodies.
According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, total trade turnover between Ukraine and Malawi in the first 11 months of 2019 amounted to USD 26.98 million.
Ukraine's negative trade balance was USD 24.76 million.
Exports amounted to USD 1.11 million. Ukrainian exports consisted mainly of flour and grinding industry products – USD 924 thousand, boilers, machines – USD 192.2 thousand.
Imports amounted to USD 25.87 million.
Malawian exports consisted mainly of tobacco and industrial tobacco substitutes – USD 25.8 million.
The Malawian side is willing to develop and deepen cooperation with Ukraine in medicine, education, agriculture, engineering and chemical industry.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation
According to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, 9 citizens of the Republic of Malawi studied at Ukrainian universities in 2019.
Peculiarities of the country
1. Malawi is the poorest country in Africa and one of the least developed countries on Earth.
2. Malawi is known for its orchids - there are over 400 species of these beautiful flowers.
3. Cattle in Malawi are more often used as a currency than as food.
