Recognition of Ukraine: March 4, 1992.
Establishment of diplomatic relations: June 10, 1993.
Ukraine considers Madagascar as a promising partner on the African continent.
On 20-27 November 2016, the Director of the Middle East and Africa Department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry paid a working visit to Antananarivo in the status of Personal Representative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to participate in the meeting of the 99th Permanent Council of La Francophonie and attend the 32nd Ministerial Conference. There is a practice of protocol correspondence.
In January-November 2019, bilateral trade in goods amounted to USD 2.9 million. At the same time, exports of goods from Ukraine to Madagascar amounted to USD 1.95 million. The import of goods from Madagascar to Ukraine amounted to USD 951.3 thousand.
There is no trade in services.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation
In 2019, according to the Ministry of Education of Ukraine, there were 19 Malagasy students.
Peculiarities of the country
1. Madagascar is the largest single island State on the planet.
2. At present, Madagascar is home to more than 24 million people, mostly from rural areas. The average population density is 33 persons per square kilometer.
3. In Madagascar, there are numerous prohibitions to keep in mind. For example, gifts are only accepted with two hands on the island, and it is customary to rub cheeks and noses instead of kisses and hugs.
