History of cooperation
Diplomatic relations with Ukraine were established on 2 July 1999.
A number of bilateral agreements were concluded such as "On trade and economic cooperation", "On encouragement and mutual protection of investments", "On cooperation in the fields of economy, education, science and technology", "On military cooperation". On July 12-14 2001, the President of the Republic of Gambia Y. Jammeh visited Ukraine on a working visit.
28.04.-02.05.2004: a working visit was made to Ukraine by a delegation from the Republic of the Gambia headed by the Secretary of State (Minister) of Foreign Affairs B. Jagne and the Secretary of State (Minister) for Industry, Construction and Infrastructure B. Garba Jahumpa.
The trade turnover actually consists entirely of Ukrainian exports.
In January-November 2019, exports amounted to USD 24.04 million.
The main export goods groups are ferrous metals; meat and edible co-products, milk and dairy products, poultry eggs; and natural honey.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation
Ukraine's specialized universities have trained a significant number of military specialists for the needs of the Gambian Military Forces.
According to the Ukrainian State Centre for International Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, during 2018-2019, 86 Gambian citizens studied in Ukraine.
Peculiarities of the country
1. The majority of the local population, about 90%, are Muslim. The rest are mostly Christians.
2. About half of the Gambian population isn’t economically active.
3. Freedom of the press in the Gambia is virtually absent. The only TV channel in the country is controlled by the government.
