History of cooperation

Ethiopia recognized Ukraine's independence on 2 January 1992. Diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Ethiopia were established on 1 April 1993. Protocol on Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Ukraine and Ethiopia is dated on 01.04.1993.

On 21-23 January 2002, a Ukrainian delegation headed by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine visited Ethiopia.

On 5 September 2019, political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia were held in Addis Ababa.

According to the State Statistical Service of Ukraine, the volume of trade for January-November 2019 between the two countries USD was 168 million.

Ukraine's exports amounted to USD 164 million and imports to USD 4 million.

The main commodity groups of Ukrainian exports are ferrous metals and grain crops.

The main commodity groups of Ukrainian imports are coffee, tea and plants.

Cultural and humanitarian cooperation

Considering that according to some estimates, during the period from 1970s and to 1990s, over 70% of Ethiopian students that studied in the former USSR received higher education in Ukraine. Nowadays there is a strong interest among Ethiopian youth in pursuing higher education also in Ukraine. United in «Association of Ethiopian Graduates of Educational Institutions of Ukraine», Ethiopian citizens - graduates of Ukrainian universities contribute positively to the development of mutually beneficial economic, political and social rapprochement of our peoples. Cultural and humanitarian cooperation is supported by the activists of the “Association of Ethiopian graduates of Educational Institutions of Ukraine”.

According to the Ukrainian State Centre for International Education, 37 students from Ethiopia were studying in Ukraine in 2019.

Peculiarities of the country

1. Half of Ethiopia’s population is Christian of the Eastern Rite, and another 10 per cent is Protestant, with a noticeable increase. One third of Ethiopia’s population is Muslim.

2. The temperature in Ethiopia is almost the same throughout the year.

3. The years here are counted, as Christians should, from Christmas, only because of the inaccuracy of the calendar Ethiopia lag behind other countries by eight years.
