History of cooperation

Recognition of Ukraine: December 20, 1993.

Establishment of diplomatic relations: December 20, 1993.

There have been no official visits since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries.

In January-November 2019, trade in goods between Ukraine and Eritrea amounted to USD 1.496 million. According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, the trade consists mainly of Ukrainian exports.

The leading position in the structure of Ukrainian exports to Eritrea during the first 11 months of 2019 was taken by cereals - its exports amounted to USD 1.494 million. This represents 99.9% of total exports to this country.

Peculiarities of the country

1. According to the Global Press Freedom Index, Eritrea is ranked last in the world. There is more freedom even in North Korea. All media are controlled by the government and there are no private radio stations or television channels.

2. Eritrea’s economy is based on agriculture, which employs about 80 per cent of the working population.

3. Eritrea is one of the few countries in the world where there is no official language. One of the most common languages in the territory of the state is Tigrinya, spoken by the Tigris. Arabic, Italian and English are also widely spoken.
