History of cooperation

September 01-04, 2004: the delegation of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and the Francophonie of Equatorial Guinea, P. Bile, visited Ukraine.

On September 16-19, 2004, at the invitation of the Head of the Ukrainian State, the President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea T.O. Nguema, accompanied by a government delegation comprised of ministers and senior officials of that country, paid a state visit to Ukraine.

A delegation of the Ministry of National Defence of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea headed by the Minister of National Defence of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, Antonio Mba Nguema, paid an official visit to Ukraine from 11 to 16 December 2005.

On March 21-25, 2011, M. Owono Edu, the Minister of Mining, Production and Energy of Equatorial Guinea, paid a working visit to Ukraine. The Minister met with the Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine Y. Boiko.

On 30 November 2014, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea in Dakar, Senegal, in the framework of the 15th Summit of the International Organization of the Francophonie.

Bilateral trade has been declining in recent years (USD13.7 million in 2013, USD 10.8 million in 2014, USD 9.9 million in 2015, in 2016 the data is not available, USD 930.9 million in 2017). Trade volumes were provided by Ukrainian exports. In 2018, the volume of bilateral trade in goods and services amounted to USD 6.3 million. In 9 months of 2019, it was USD 3.7 million.

Cultural and humanitarian cooperation

A number of cooperation agreements on education have been signed between Ukraine and Equatorial Guinea, namely:

- Agreement on cooperation in the field of education and science between the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports of Equatorial Guinea;

- Agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of Equatorial Guinea on mutual recognition of educational certificates;

- Agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of Equatorial Guinea on trade and economic cooperation.

Peculiarities of the country

1. There are three official languages left over from the colonizers - French, Spanish and Portuguese. In practice, few speak French, and Portuguese is not spoken at all.

2. To get a higher education, it is enough to know Word and Excel programs.

3. Per capita income in Equatorial Guinea is comparable to some European countries, but the uneven distribution of income creates a social divide of terrible proportions. There are either the very rich, the poor or the very poor. There is virtually no middle class.
