History of cooperation
Official Diplomatic relations between Ukraine and the Arab Republic of Egypt were established on 25 January 1992. Diplomatic representation of Egypt in Ukraine started its activity in May 1993. There are Embassies of Ukraine and Egypt in Cairo and Kyiv.
Visits at the level of heads of state: the President of Ukraine L. Kravchuk visited Egypt in December 1992; the President of Ukraine V. Yushchenko visited Egypt in April 2008.
The President of Ukraine Poroshenko met with the President of Egypt
A. Al-Sisi on 15 February 2019 during the Munich Security Conference.
The President of Ukraine V. Zelensky met with the President of Egypt A. Al-Sisi on 25 September 2019 in the framework of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly.
A friendship group with Ukraine (11 parliamentarians) was established in the Egyptian Parliament in May 2018. Inter-parliamentary cooperation reached a new level after the visit of members of the Egyptian friendship group to Ukraine on 18-21 December 2018.
Total trade in goods and services between Ukraine and Egypt in January-November 2019 amounted to USD 2.367 billion.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation
The agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt is a fundamental part of cultural and scientific cooperation. Ukraine participates in international cultural events held in Egypt (book conferences, film festivals, youth forums, etc.).
An important milestone in the development of cultural and humanitarian cooperation was the presentation of the national stand of Ukraine (for the first time) at the 51st International Book Fair in Cairo (22 January - 04 February 2020).
Another outstanding event on 26 and 28 October 2019 – the international staging of G. Verdi's opera “Aida” with participation of about 150 musicians and singers from Ukraine (INSO-Lviv Orchestra and the DUMKA Cappella), conducted by the famous outstanding Ukrainian conductor Oksana Liniv.
Peculiarities of the country
1. 95% of Egypt is desert. The majority of Egypt’s population lives in 5% of the territory.
2. Even if it’s over 40 degrees outside, men still wear white clothes and women wear black clothes. They say if a woman is dressed in black, she will come home from a walk sooner.
3. The Egyptians themselves say that 10 degrees for them is very cold and people try not to leave their houses. If the temperature drops below +10°C, Egyptian children are excused from school because they are too exposed to the disease.
