The Government of Djibouti officially recognized Ukraine's independence on 6 January 1992 and diplomatic relations with Ukraine have not been established. No diplomatic or consular missions have been set up in Ukraine; the nearest Embassy of Djibouti responsible for Ukrainian affairs is situated in Paris, France. Ukraine's affairs in Djibouti are conducted by the Embassy of Ukraine in Ethiopia.

In 2018, Djibouti voted for the UNGA resolution on human rights in Crimea

In October 2019, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Zayats met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Djibouti, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, on the framework of the 36th session of the Francophone Ministerial Conference.

According to the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine, the volume of trade in goods between Ukraine and Djibouti in the first 11 months of 2019 amounted to USD 37 million. This was mainly due to Ukrainian exports (imports - USD 46,000). Ukraine's main exports to Djibouti are cereals.

In 2018, bilateral trade turnover amounted to USD 34.9m, primarily due to Ukrainian exports.

Cultural and humanitarian cooperation

Peculiarities of the country

1. Djibouti, formerly a French colony, is the main commercial port for the landlocked neighboring Ethiopia.

2. There are no pavements on the streets in the local towns. It is not safe to walk, also because you can get run over by local motorists.

3. The national constitution officially recognizes Islam as one state religion. However, Djibouti's constitution provides freedom of religion. It means that every citizen can practice any religion of own choice.
