History of cooperation
Recognition of Ukraine: December 6, 1991.
Establishment of diplomatic relations: March 12, 1992.
Cuba voted against the UN General Assembly resolution 68/262 of 27.03.2014 «Territorial integrity of Ukraine», as well as against resolutions adopted in support of Ukraine by the United Nations Human Rights Council (2014) and UNESCO (2014 and 2015).
On 31 March 2015, a parliamentary group of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on inter-parliamentary relations with the Republic of Cuba was established in the Verkhovna Rada of the VIII convocation. The Friendship Group «Cuba-Ukraine» was created in the National Assembly of People’s Authorities of Cuba.
In 2014, the volume of bilateral trade in goods and services amounted to USD 87.4 million. Ukrainian exports to Cuba amounted to USD 85.1 million and imports from Cuba amounted USD 2.2 million. The surplus for Ukraine was USD 82.9 million.
In the first half of 2015, the volume of bilateral trade amounted to USD 31.7 million. Exports to Cuba amounted to USD 31.3 million and Cuban imports amounted USD 0.4 million. The posititve surplus is USD $30.9 million.
Ukrainian exports to Cuba consist mainly of aircraft, machines, cereals and mineral fertilizers. The main imports from Cuba: coffee, juices and tobacco.
The volume of foreign direct investment in Ukraine amounts to USD 2.1 million which are mainly distributed in the health and pharmaceutical industries.
In 2014-2015 due to Ukrainian export of four AN-158 to Cuba, the aircraft fleet of these airliners increased to 6 units.
Cuba has a joint venture for the repair and modernization of "KrAZ" trucks.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation
According to Cuba's statistical data, 24,000 Ukrainian patients, including 20,000 children, received treatment and rehabilitation under the bilateral programme "Children of Chernobyl".
Peculiarities of the country
1. Medicine in Cuba is one of the best in the region. Treatment is as free as education in schools and universities. All Cuban children are provided with school supplies and uniforms. Pupils have free meals. Even dental care is free.
2. There is a system of food cards, as it was in the USSR. It is possible to buy certain food products only by cards: chicken meat, milk, eggs, beans, pasta. This simple system allows to buy products for 7-10 days in advance.
3. There is not a single plant or animal that poses a real threat to human life. From a security point of view, therefore, it is really quiet and peaceful country.
