History of cooperation
Recognition of Ukraine: July 23, 1993.
Establishment of diplomatic relations: July 23, 1993.
Political relations: there is an Honorary Consulate of the Comoros in Kyiv, headed by A. Kuznetsov.
There are no high-level bilateral bodies.
According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, trade turnover between Ukraine and the Union of the Comoros amounted to USD 630,000 in the first 11 months of 2019.
The main Ukrainian exports were meat and edible co-products – USD 277.800, products of the flour grinding industry - USD 254.800 and wood and wood products - USD 20,000.
The main goods groups of Comorian exports were coffee and tea – USD 64,800.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation
In 2019, according to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, there were 38 citizens of the Union of the Comoros studying in Ukraine.
Peculiarities of the country
1. Although 8 out of every 10 Comorian workers are employed in agriculture, the country still cannot feed itself, so the major part of imports is food. Especially rice, because it is quite cheap.
2. Despite a number of population close to a million people, there are only about 500 police officers on the Comoros.
3. The local currency, the Comorian franc, is very unusual because of its bright colour. Comorian banknotes are considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world.
