History of cooperation
The government of Burundi officially recognized Ukraine's independence on 6 January 1992. Diplomatic relations with Ukraine were established on 26 February 1992. There are no diplomatic or consular representations in Ukraine; the closest Burundian Embassy dealing with Ukraine is in Moscow, Russia.
There are no high-level bilateral bodies yet.
The appointment of an Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Burundi is being considered to establish bilateral economic relations and political relations.
According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, total trade turnover between Ukraine and Burundi in the first 11 months of 2019 amounted to USD 658,100. Exports amounted to USD 53,500.
Main Ukrainian export items: alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and vinegar, electric machines, other base metal products, mineral fuels, oil and refined products
Burundi’s main and only export was coffee and tea.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation
According to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, in 2019 there were no citizens of the Republic of Burundi studying at the universities of Ukraine.
Peculiarities of the country
1.According to the UN official information Burundi is the poorest country in the world.
2. There are only 600 square kilometres of forest in Burundi. The rest has had to be cut down because the population density is 323 people per square kilometre. Not only the flora but also the fauna in this state has been reduced due to agricultural activities.
3. In Burundi, only 7% of the roads are paved. There are no railways. However, there is an international airport and seven small airports.
