History of cooperation
March 1995 – During the World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen an informal meeting took place between the President of Ukraine L. Kuchma and the President of Burkina Faso B. Compaoré.
September 1997: the meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine H. Udovenko and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Burkina Faso Y. Ouedraogo took place in New York.
May 2011: the meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine K. Gryshchenko and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Cooperation of Burkina Faso Dj. Bassolé was held in Istanbul.
Although Ukraine’s cooperation with Burkina Faso has not yet acquired the desired momentum, there are considerable prospects for the development of cooperation in the fields of electricity, construction, geological exploration, agriculture, transport and healthcare.
Bilateral trade turnover consists mainly of Ukrainian exports of ferrous metals, products of the flour grinding industry.
In January-November 2019, bilateral trade turnover amounted to USD 15.1 million. It is a 47% increase compared to the same period in 2018. In 2018 it amounted to USD 11.6 million. In 2017 it amounted to USD 14.4 million.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation
Cooperation in the field of education and training is promising. Between 1960 and 1990, Ukraine trained about 400 specialists for Burkina Faso.
Peculiarities of the country
1. Burkina Faso, formerly Upper Volta, means “the country of honest people” in local languages.
2. Approximately one fifth of the population of Burkina Faso practiced ancient local cults in matters of religion.
3. In Burkina Faso, there are almost no people over the age of 65. It happens because of low overall standard of living in the country, as well as poor healthcare.
