History of cooperation
The government of Botswana officially recognized Ukraine's independence on 11 February 1992. There are no diplomatic or consular representations in Ukraine. The nearest Embassy of Botswana responsible for Ukrainian affairs is situated in London, the United Kingdom. The Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of South Africa is responsible for Ukrainian affairs in Botswana. There are no contacts at the highest level.
There is a practice of diplomatic correspondence.
In 2018, bilateral trade in goods amounted to about USD 1.8 million. At the same time, Ukrainian exports to Botswana amounted to USD 456,600 and imports amounted to USD 1.32 million.
In January-November 2019, bilateral trade in goods amounted to USD 3.13 million. Ukraine's exports to Botswana amounted to USD 1.27 million and imports of goods from Botswana amounted to USD 1.32 million. Ukraine's exports to Botswana amounted to USD 1.27 million and imports of goods from Botswana to Ukraine amounted to USD 1.86 million. Services trade is absent. There is no investment cooperation.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation
In 2019, according to the Ministry of Education of Ukraine, there were 13 students from Botswana.
Peculiarities of the country
1. Botswana is a major exporter of diamonds, known worldwide for their high quality. The country is a world leader in the value of precious stones.
2. About 18% of Botswana's territory is occupied by nature reserves and national parks. One of them, Chobe Park, is home to the world`s largest elephant population.
3. Botswana has the second highest AIDS prevalence rate in the world. Swaziland ranks first in this sad ranking.
