History of cooperation

The Government of Benin officially recognized Ukraine's independence on 9 January 1992 and established diplomatic relations with Ukraine on 10 April 1992. The Embassy of Ukraine in Nigeria carries out the foreign policy of Ukraine in Benin. The Honorary Consul of the Republic of Benin in Ukraine is Ahunu William Edmond Dossa.

Bilateral relations between Ukraine and Benin are friendly. In the political sphere both countries have similar or very similar views (fight against international terrorism, Middle East settlement, participation in peacekeeping operations, role of the UN in solution of acute problems of modern times, etc.). Trade circulation is on the rise. Work on strengthening contractual and legal frameworks and developing inter-parliamentary ties is on process.

According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, in January-November 2019, the volume of trade in goods between the countries amounted to USD 28.6 million.

In 2018 it amounted to USD 11.5 million. Trade has traditionally been facilitated by exports of Ukrainian goods to Benin. Imports from Benin only amounted to USD 19.9 thousand.

The commodity structure of exports is: fertilizers – 50%; sugar and sugar confectionery - 16.8 %; ferrous metals - 14.9 %; flour grinding industry - 10.1 %; milk and dairy products; poultry eggs; natural honey - 3.9 %.

Cultural and humanitarian cooperation

According to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, there are 4 students from the Republic of Benin studying in Ukraine (2019).

An agreement with Benin on cooperation in the field of education is being considered.

Peculiarities of the country

1. The population of the country is about 11 million. It is very ethnically mixed, with more than 60 nations.

2. Benin is one of the few African countries that fully provide its people with basic food.

3. Photographing most of Benin’s attractions is strictly prohibited.
