History of cooperation

The Republic of Angola recognized Ukraine's independence on 30 September 1994. Diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Angola were established on September 30, 1994. In 2004, the Embassy of Ukraine in Angola started working. On June 24-25, 1999 the official delegation of Ukraine headed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine with the status of a Special Envoy of the President of Ukraine visited Angola first time.

April 4-5, 2001: G. Chikoti, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Angola paid a working visit to Ukraine, during which  Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Angola was signed.

May 18-19, 2013: a working visit to Ukraine of the General Manuel Helder Vieira Dias «Kopelipa» - the State Minister, the Head of the Military Office of the President of Angola.

November 19-22, 2017: the delegation of the Ukrainian Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food headed by the Deputy Minister for European Integration paid a working visit to Angola.

In January-November 2019, the volume of bilateral trade in goods amounted to USD 19.9 million. Exports of goods from Ukraine to Angola amounted to USD 19.6 million. Imports from Angola to Ukraine amounted to USD 250,000. The main exports are still flour-grinding industry, animal and vegetable fats and oils, cereals, boilers and machines, sugar and sugar confectionery.

The main imports from Angola were natural or cultivated pearls, precious or semi-precious stones, wood and wood products, meat and fish products.

Cultural and humanitarian cooperation

Cooperation between Ukraine and the Republic of Angola in science and education is carried out mainly in the field of training various specialists in Ukrainian universities.

According to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, 306 Angolan students studied at Ukrainian universities in 2019.

Angolan youth receive higher education in Ukraine mainly at the universities of Kyiv, Vinnytsa, Dnieper, Kharkiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv and Odessa.

Peculiarities of the country

1. The capital of Angola, the city of Luanda, is the most expensive city in the world. The monthly cost of a two-bedroom apartment is 4,000 euros and more.

2. Christianity is the main religion in Angola. Researches have shown that about 94% of the population is Christian. Islam is prohibited by law in Angola.

3. Almost half of Angola lives below the poverty line. Less than 70 per cent of the Angolan population can read and write.
