History of cooperation
Diplomatic relations between Ukraine and the People`s Democratic Republic of Algeria were established on 20 August 1992. On 16 November 1992, the first Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Algeria, Belramoul Kamerzerman, presented his credentials to the President of Ukraine. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine A. Zlenko paid the first official visit to Algeria on December 13-15, 2002. The Embassy of Ukraine in Algeria was opened in 1999.
An important contribution to the development of bilateral cooperation and deepening of political dialogue between the two countries was made during the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine B. Tarasyuk to Algeria in July 1999. Then the Minister participated in the 35th OAU Summit.
Official delegations of Algeria visited Ukraine in 1993, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2015. In September 2017, the fifth meeting of the Intergovernmental Ukrainian-Algerian Commission on the issues of Military and technical Cooperation took place in Algeria. The next meeting of this commission was scheduled for the first quarter of 2021 in Kyiv. On 13 October 2020, at the initiative of the Ukrainian side, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba had a telephone conversation with his Algerian counterpart Sabri Boukadoum.
According to the information of the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine, foreign trade in goods for January-August 2020 amounted to USD 275.9 million.
Total trade in goods and services between Ukraine and Algeria in January-August 2020 amounted to USD 282.42 million.
The exports of goods amounted to USD 269.3 million (54.9 % of the total period of 2019).
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation
Ukraine and Algeria have established good contacts between a number of universities in the technical fields, and exchanges regularly take place at the level of sports federations, symphony orchestras, etc.
Regular contacts are maintained with representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora, arts and sports. It has become a good tradition for Ukrainian citizens to write the All-Ukrainian Radio Dictation as part of the celebration of the Day of Ukrainian Literature and Language (November 2018-2019).
In 2020, the Embassy held a series of events to celebrate the Day of Unification and Freedom Ukraine, the Day of the Crimean Tatar National Flag, the Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repressions, the anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of Ukraine, the Day of the State Flag and the Independence Day of Ukraine.
In 2020, mainly online, due to the quarantine restrictions in Algeria, the interaction with representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora, the artistic and sports fields of Algeria and Ukraine is continuing, as well as the active cooperation with representatives of the print, radio and television media in Algeria.
Peculiarities of the country
1. The capital of Algeria is also named Algeria.
2. Being located in North Africa Algeria is the largest state in the African continent. Not so long ago, Algeria was second only to the Sudan that was divided into Sudan and South Sudan in 2011. Thus, Algeria got the title of the largest country in Africa.
3. As the desert occupies a huge part of Algeria, the most part of the population lives on the northern coast. Every tenth Algerian lives in the capital city.
