History of cooperation

Recognition of Ukraine: January 9, 1992.

Establishment of diplomatic relations: January 28, 1992.

Chile has shown itself to be a consistent supporter of Ukraine in the international arena, including  the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Security Council.

In 2015, Chile-Ukraine friendship groups were established in both Chambers of the National Congress of Chile. The Verkhovna Rada Deputy Group for Inter-parliamentary Relations with the Republic of Chile was established on 15 July 2015.

In 2014, total bilateral trade between Ukraine and Chile amounted to USD 60 million with trade balance of USD 47.9 million.

Ukrainian exports amounted to USD 6.1 million. Imports of goods from Chile amounted to USD 54 million.

In the first half of 2015, the trade turnover between Ukraine and Chile amounted to USD 16.8 million with a negative balance of USD 14 million to Ukraine. Exports from Ukraine to Chile amounted to USD 1.3 million. Imports to Ukraine from Chile to USD 15.4 million.

Main groups of export goods: boilers, machines.

Main groups of imports goods: ores, slag and ash, seeds and oil crops.

Cultural and humanitarian cooperation

The Chilean-Ukrainian Integration Chamber was created by Chilean businessmen and Ukrainians living in Chile in 2014. Its main aim is to implement the prospects for cooperation in trade, education, culture and sports. After organizing this Chamber cultural and humanitarian cooperation between these two countries was greatly developed.

Twinning relations were established between Kyiv and Santiago, as well as between Odessa and Valparaiso.

Peculiarities of the country

1. There is a seven-point grading scale in Chile, Chilean pupils have a very low level of education compared to Ukrainian ones, and final examinations are not difficult at all.

2. The import of all foodstuffs into Chile is strictly prohibited.

3. Films in national cinemas are broadcast in the original language with Spanish subtitles, with the exception of children’s films.
