History of cooperation
Recognition of Ukraine: December 2, 1991 (Canada became the first Western country to recognize Ukraine’s independence and the second after Poland).
Establishment of diplomatic relations: January 27, 1992.
Long-standing friendly relations unite Ukraine and Canada. The Canadian politicians actively support democratic changes in Ukraine after the victory of the dignity revolution and promote political, financial and technical reforms in our country. After Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea and the beginning of Russian military aggression in Donbas, Canada consistently supports Ukraine both within the framework of international organizations (UN, OSCE, NATO, G-7) and at the bilateral level. Canadian government officials have repeatedly issued statements that condemned Russia’s policy against Ukraine and confirmed Canada’s position on non-recognition of illegal annexation of Crimea, support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, etc.
Since the beginning of 2014, bilateral dialog at the high and highest levels has been significantly intensified: the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko made an official visit to Canada on September 16-17, 2014; the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Joseph Harper visited Ukraine three times (On March 22, 2014, On June 7, 2014 and On June 6, 2015). On July 14, 2015, the Prime Minister of Ukraine Arsenii Yatseniuk visited Canada
Contacts are actively developing at the inter-agency level, including the foreign policy institutions in two countries.
Canada-Ukraine Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group actively works in the Parliament of Canada. In February 2015, a similar group of friendship with the Canadian Parliament was formed in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the current convocation. (The Head of the Group – Viktor Vovk, people's deputy)
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation
The special character of Ukrainian-Canadian cooperation in the cultural and humanitarian spheres is due to the presence of the huge Ukrainian diaspora in Canada, which reaches almost 1.2 million people and has an extremely developed system of public and cultural organizations, research and development institutions, museums, art groups, art associations, etc. This promotes the active development of direct interpersonal contacts between citizens and non-governmental organizations in Ukraine and Canada.
Every year, about 10 different Ukrainian festivals take place in different cities of Canada. The oldest of them is the Canadian National Ukrainian Festival, which has been held in Dauphin, Manitoba, since 1965. The largest Ukrainian festival in North America is the annual Ukrainian Festival in Toronto.
Peculiarities of the country
1. Canada is the member of the G-20 where women’s rights are highly protected.
2. Canada ranks third in oil reserves after Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.
3. There is the largest number of donut shops per capita in the world.
